Frequently asked questions about care & maintenance
What is the best way to clean my wooden serving board?
Wooden serving boards, sharing boards and cutting boards are a beautiful addition to any table.
With the right care, they will stay looking their best for longer and remain hygienic to use.
Clean your board using a soft brush, lukewarm water and mild soap.
Avoid harsh cleaning products or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the wood.
After washing, dry the board thoroughly with a clean cloth. Then leave it to dry
upright, with the wood grain running vertically. This allows the wood to dry naturally
and helps it retain its shape.
Please note: never put wooden boards in the dishwasher. The heat and
excess water can cause permanent damage, such as warping or cracking.
How do I treat my wooden serving board with oil or wax?
A wooden serving board needs regular care to keep it looking beautiful and in good condition.
Use a food-safe mineral oil, such as Pure Wood Oil. It penetrates deep
into the wood, helps prevent it from drying out and protects against odours and discolouration.
For extra protection, apply a layer of Pure Wood Wax. It creates
a thin, water-repellent layer on the surface and helps keep the oil locked into the wood.
Step-by-step:
Make sure your board is clean and completely dry.
Use a clean, dry cloth.
Apply a small amount of oil to the surface.
Rub the oil into the wood in the direction of the grain, including the edges and underside.
Leave the oil to soak in for at least 20 minutes.
Buff the wood with another clean cloth to give it a beautiful finish.
For new chopping blocks, apply 3–4 coats of oil, allowing the wood to rest between each coat.
Finish with a thin layer of wax. This seals the oil into the wood, adds a subtle sheen and makes the surface more resistant to water and stains.
Please note: woods such as teak, olive wood and walnut naturally
contain oils and may leave marks on the surface underneath when exposed to liquids
or care products. Always allow the wood to dry thoroughly before putting it back in place.
Is the wood very dry?
Start with 1–2 coats of oil and finish with a layer of wax. This will help restore
and protect the wood.
Help! My wooden serving board went in the dishwasher. What should I do?
Don’t worry, but act quickly. Remove the board from the dishwasher straight away
and dry it thoroughly. Then lay it flat in a dry place, away from direct sunlight
or heat sources, and allow the wood to dry gradually.
Has the board warped? In some cases, the wood may partially return to its original
shape as it dries.
Once the board is completely dry, you can lightly sand any rough areas with fine
sandpaper. Then treat the surface again with Pure Wood Oil and,
if desired, a layer of Pure Wood Wax to nourish and protect the wood.
If the board remains warped after drying, unfortunately the damage may be permanent.
Why should I regularly care for my wooden serving board?
Regularly treating the wood with oil or wax helps prevent it from drying out or cracking.
It also helps the board retain its warm appearance and keeps it strong and hygienic to use.
Proper care also helps your board last much longer, making it a more sustainable choice.
A little care goes a long way.
How often should I treat my wooden serving board with oil or wax?
This depends on how often you use your board. When your board is new, we recommend
treating it with oil once a week.
After that, once a month is usually enough, or whenever the surface starts to look
dry or dull.
Can my stoneware go in the dishwasher?
The stoneware from our Espuma and Mano collections
is carefully crafted. Each piece is handmade and finished with a glaze that gives it
its distinctive appearance.
Small variations in colour and texture make every piece unique. That is part of the
beauty of handmade products. To keep your stoneware looking its best for as long as
possible, it is important to treat it with care.
The products are dishwasher-safe, but we recommend using a gentle programme at a low
temperature. Excessive heat may cause the glaze to become dull or develop fine cracks.
Avoid sudden changes in temperature, such as pouring hot water onto a very cold surface.
For everyday cleaning, use a soft sponge and mild soap. Abrasive sponges or harsh
cleaning products may damage the glaze.
